Reasons for Tooth Extraction Services
Removing wisdom teeth, your third set of molars, is the most common reason for tooth extraction in young adults. Most people do not have room to accommodate these additional teeth, causing their mouths to become crowded and leading to alignment issues. In other cases, wisdom teeth may not erupt or erupt at an awkward angle and become impacted, leading to pain and potential infection.
Most patients are advised by their dentists to have their wisdom teeth removed early before they can cause oral health problems or become embedded in the nerves, significantly more unsafe to remove in later years. During your regular checkups, Dr. Moylan will track their progression to determine whether extraction is advisable.
Sometimes, significant damage to a tooth will require immediate extraction. This can occur from dental trauma caused by an injury or serious damage from infection or decay.
Dr. Moylan will do everything possible to save your tooth before resorting to tooth extraction. Cracked or damaged teeth can often be repaired with a porcelain crown while infected teeth are usually treatable with a routine root canal procedure. However, if you need a tooth removed, Dr. Moylan will make sure you’re properly informed about the extraction process and take every precaution to make the experience painless and stress-free.
Tooth extraction helps to prepare your mouth for beneficial restorative options such as implants, bridges, and dentures. In certain cases where adult teeth cannot erupt properly due to baby teeth that won’t fall out, extraction can help the permanent tooth grow in. Extraction can also make orthodontic treatments like traditional braces and Invisalign® more effective by giving teeth room to move.
Types of Extraction Services
There are two types of extraction Dr. Moylan can perform, simple or non-surgical and surgical. A simple extraction involves Dr. Moylan loosening the tooth with a special device known as an elevator before removing the tooth.
A surgical extraction means Dr. Moylan will make incisions into the gums so he can access every part of the tooth. In some cases, the tooth may need to be broken into smaller pieces before it can be removed. If you have impacted wisdom teeth, chances are you’ll need a surgical extraction.
The Extraction Process
At the Alexandria Smile Center, the tooth extraction procedure will generally proceed in several simple stages:
- First, we’ll examine your entire mouth to determine the source of your pain. If your tooth is severely decayed, damaged, or causes complications with your gums and jawbone, it’ll most likely need to be removed.
- During the procedure, a local anesthetic will be administered to numb your mouth and relieve any pain or discomfort you may experience. If dental anxiety is an issue, Dr. Moylan can provide dental sedation to help alleviate your stress.
- Once your mouth is numb, Dr. Moylan will gently extract your tooth with specialized tools for a painless experience. For unerupted wisdom teeth or any other impacted teeth, an incision will first be made in the gums to gain access to each tooth.
- Dr. Moylan will thoroughly clean the surgical site of any and close your wound. Your dentist will use dissolving stitches to hold the incision closed through the healing process.
Most tooth extractions are quick, safe, and pain-free. Depending on the anesthesia and sedation used, you may need someone to drive you home following an extraction procedure.
Post-Extraction Recovery
After tooth extraction, resting for several days is important to promote healing. Avoid spitting and anything that creates suction in your mouth, as behaviors like this can dislodge a blood clot and restart the flow of blood. Other things to consider while healing include:
- Swelling and Bruising — You may experience some swelling or bruising of the face after an extraction. However, this will dissipate in a matter of days. Applying an ice pack to affected areas of the face can help speed up this process.
- Stitches — Dr. Moylan will use dissolving stitches to close the wound from extraction. They’ll disappear harmlessly on their own, avoiding the need for another appointment to have them removed.
- Beverages — Water is the only recommended liquid following surgery. Avoid sugary, alcoholic, carbonated, or hot drinks, and don’t use a straw during the first 7-days of recovery.
- Tobacco Use — Don’t smoke or use oral tobacco for at least 72 hours after surgery. This can lead to infection and slow the healing process. The sucking motion can also dislodge blood clots.
Frequently Asked Questions
The exact cost of your tooth extraction will depend on multiple factors, including how many teeth are needed to be extracted, what kind of extraction you require, and your insurance. Your dentist and the rest of our team encourage you to call your provider beforehand and ask them which costs they can cover.
If you still need help affording your tooth extraction services, don’t worry. Alexandria Smile Center offers flexible financing options and a membership plan to help you save money and ensure you get the quality dental care all our patients deserve.
An extraction for one tooth may take as little as three to fifteen minutes. However, it’s important to remember that this time frame will vary based on whether or not the extraction is simple or surgical, as well as the number of teeth that require extraction.
To help speed up the healing process, your dentist is likely to recommend the following:
- Gently Rinse With Salt Water — 24 hours after tooth extraction, gently rinse with a saline solution consisting of 1/2 teaspoon of salt and one cup of warm water for ten seconds after meals. The salt will help inhibit the growth of bacteria and promote healing of the gums. Remember to avoid vigorous rinsing as this can dislodge blood clots and impede the healing process instead of assisting it.
- Eat A Soft Food Diet — Sticking to soft, nutrient-rich foods for at least one week after extraction will help prevent irritation and the dislodging of blood clots. Your Alexandria dentist can give you some ideas for foods that will be safe and beneficial for you to eat during your recovery period.
- Elevate Your Head During Rest — Your dentist will likely recommend you keep your head elevated on a pillow whenever you’re laying down. The elevation will help lower the blood pressure in the blood vessels, limiting bleeding and drain lymph fluid and blood away from the surgical site. This reduces inflammation and helps you heal faster.
Your dentist will probably advise that you fast for a specified period of time, usually at least 12 hours before having teeth removed, especially if you’re undergoing sedation. Eating before going under sedation increases the risk of nausea, asphyxiation, and other complications during and after the procedure.
If you’ll only be undergoing extraction with a local anesthetic, you may need to fast for a shorter amount of time. Regardless, be sure to follow all preoperative and postoperative instructions from your dentist carefully to help make sure your extraction goes smoothly.
